This model, Forked Self, was trained on two distinct groups of works.

Group A: A selection of more recent pieces that represent a cohesive theme and style—some of my most defining works to date:
- Masked Workers, Space Hardrock Machine, and Jack of Clubs (PlayingArts collection)

Group B: A body of earlier works created roughly between 2011 and 2020. Most of these have never been minted as NFTs and likely never will be. A few were minted experimentally in the early NFT era but were never intended for sale. These pieces were made before I had established a consistent theme or visual identity.

Over nearly a decade of making the works in Group B, I continuously experimented with line, color, composition, and narrative.

The use of inked outlines, cel-animation-style coloring, and subtle gradients remained constant, but the characters, subject matter, and visual density evolved constantly. After that long period of exploration, I eventually made a decision to narrow my direction—both thematically and stylistically. That decision led to the creation of the Modern Life is Rubbish and Masked Workers series.

During the development of these series, I drew influence from a wide range of sources—Hergé’s Tintin, Moebius, documentary photographs from the Great Depression, classic American comics and European graphic novels that began circulating in Korea during my teenage years… as well as countless failed attempts, passing visual fragments lodged in memory, novels, music. Even commercial work—advertising illustrations, toy packaging graphics I created to make a living—all simmered together in a single pot, forming what would become my current style.

But even as I found a direction, I often thought about the possibilities I left behind. If I had pursued certain instincts differently, if I had taken a different route through my own experiments, my work might have evolved in a completely different direction. We can only walk one path at a time, and the others become vague but persistent curiosities.

Then came a proposal from TITLES to create a custom AI model. The idea was to replicate my current style. When I received the offer, I was confronted with two fundamental questions:

First, how accurately can AI replicate an artist’s style?
Second, is an artist’s style ever truly fixed?

First. AI is a powerful tool, but not an omnipotent one. Based on a limited number of artworks (in my case, a few dozen), it is impossible to fully replicate the breadth of an artist’s style. The images generated by AI are often more polished, more technically refined—even with the glitches that still appear. But they don’t feel entirely like my work. My illustrations are layered with technical imperfection, doubt, emotion, and hazy intuition.

Second. An artist’s style is never static. Both my 2021 Modern Life is Rubbish series and the more recent Life is a Theme Park were created by my hand. Yet their components—color palettes, layouts, character designs—differ drastically. My style will continue to evolve in the future. So any attempt to "replicate" it at this fixed moment would amount to a kind of taxidermy. Confronting that strange, frozen version of myself was discomforting.

As I considered these issues, I returned to my earlier question: What if I had made different choices? What if the experiments in Group B had accumulated in another order, or crystallized into different instincts? I might have become a different kind of artist altogether.

AI, at its core, is a probability engine. It allows me to simulate those alternate stylistic outcomes—to explore versions of myself I never became.

Forked Self is a tool that uses a combination of my recent and past works to explore questions like:

"What kind of artist would Mr Misang be if those early experiments had developed differently?"

"What alternate futures were buried at the ends of those forgotten branches?"

In this sense, the model was not designed to replicate or mimic my most current, refined style.

Rather, it blends a selection of my defined works with the vast fragments of unchosen possibilities—constructing, through the unique logic of AI, a new version of “MrMisang.”

Forked Self is a creative engine that summons the unrealized possibilities of the past into the tools of the present.

It is a re-creation of paths I never walked—and a launchpad toward futures you might now explore. I hope you use this model to complete, with your own hands, the pictures I never drew.

그룹 B : 대략 2011년-2020년 사이에 제작된 과거 작품들로, 대부분은 NFT로 발행된 적 없으며, 앞으로도 그럴 계획이 없다. 이 중 극히 일부는 NFT씬 초기에 미판매 목적으로, 실험적으로 발행되었다. 아직 일관된 테마와 스타일을 갖추기 이전의 작품들이다.그룹 B를 그리던 10년 가까운 시간 동안 나는 꾸준히 선과 색, 구조와 서사를 실험하고 탐구했다. 펜선으로 경계를 나눈 오브젝트, 셀 애니메이션식 채색, 미묘한 그라디언트 등은 계속 유지되었지만, 등장인물의 형태나 주제, 화면의 밀도는 끊임없이 달라졌다. 이 긴 시기를 지나며 나는 마침내 스타일과 주제를 하나의 방향으로 좁히기로 결심했다. 그 결과 나온 것이 아래의 Modern Life is Rubbish 시리즈와 Masked Workers 시리즈다.

이 연작을 준비하는 동안, 나는 많은 작품들에 영향을 받았다. 에르제의 TinTin, 뫼비우스, 대공황 시절의 다큐 사진들, 내 사춘기 시절 한국에 수입되기 시작했던 미국 고전 만화들과 유럽의 그래픽 노블들… 수많은 시도와 실패, 스쳐가듯 머리에 박힌 이미지들, 소설들, 음악들. 생계를 위해 제작했던 각종 광고 일러스트들, 유아용 장난감 패키지 그림들… 이 모든 것들이 하나의 냄비에서 끓어오르듯, 내 현재의 스타일을 만들었다.

그러나 나는 가끔, 다른 가능성들에 대해 생각한다. 만일 내가 과거의 시행착오들을 다른 방식으로 겪었다면, 내 작품은 지금과는 전혀 다른 방향으로 발전했을 수도 있다. 나는 여러 갈래의 가능성들 중 하나만을 택해 나아 갈 수 밖에 없었다. 가보지 않았던 과거의 갈래들에 대한 궁금증은 막연한 상상으로 남겨 둘 수 밖에 없었다. 그러던 중 ,TITLES로부터 커스텀 AI모델 제작에 대한 제안이 들어왔다. 나의 현재 스타일을 유사하게 복제하는 AI를 제작해보자는 제안이었다. 나는 두 가지 고민에 빠졌다.

첫째. AI는 작가의 스타일을 얼마나 정확하게 복제할 수 있는가?

둘째, 애초에 ‘작가의 스타일’이란 고정된 것인가?

첫째. AI는 매우 좋은 도구지만, 전능한 도구는 아니다. 제한된 수의 작품(내 경우는 수십점)을 기반으로, 한 작가의 전체 스타일을 완벽히 재현하는 것은 불가능하다. AI가 만들어낸 이미지들은 종종 기술적으로 더 정제되어 보인다. 아직도 많이 발생하는 글리치를 포함하더라도, 큰 관점에서는 그렇다. 하지만 그것이 온전히 내 작업처럼 느껴지지는 않는다. 내 그림들에는 기술적 불완전함, 고민, 감정, 그리고 흐릿한 직관이 레이어로 쌓여있다.

둘째. 작가의 스타일은 멈추지 않고 변한다. 내 2021년작인 Modern Life is Rubbish 시리즈와, 비교적 최근작인 Life is a Theme Park 시리즈는 모두 내 손에서 탄생했다. 그러나 요소들을 자세히 뜯어보면, 색체, 레이아웃, 인물 묘사 방식 등 디테일은 서로 아주 다르다. 이처럼 내 작품 스타일은 미래에도 계속 바뀔 것이다. 그렇다면, 지금 시점의 스타일을 ‘복제’ 하는 AI는 결국 ‘작가의 고정 된 박제’일 수 밖에 없다. 나는 그 기이한 박제품을 마주하는 것이 어딘가 불편하고 낯설었다.

두 시리즈 모두 이번 AI 훈련에 사용되지 않았다.

나는 위의 문제들에 대해 고민하다가, 앞선 내 궁금증에 대해 떠올렸다. 여러 갈래의 가능성들 중, 내가 택하지 않았던 다른 방향들. 내 과거의 실험들(그룹 B)이 만일 다른 방식으로 축적되었다면, 나는 현재 전혀 다른 스타일을 구현하는 작가가 되었을지도 모른다. 그리고 AI는 그런 ‘다른 가능성의 완성된 스타일’들을 지금 이 자리에서 시뮬레이션 할 수 있게 한다.

Forked Self는 내 최근 작품들 일부와 다수의 과거 작품들을 사용해, 다음을 탐색하는 도구다. :

“그 시도들이 다른 방식으로 완성되었다면, MrMisang은 어떤 스타일을 갖췄을까?”

“그 과거의 갈래 끝에는 어떤 또 다른 미래가 있었을까?”

즉, 이 모델은 현재 MrMisang이 구현하는 가장 최근의 정제된 스타일을 복제하거나 모방하도록 설계되어 있지 않다. 대신, 이 모델은 내가 선택했던 몇몇 확립된 작업들과, 선택하지 않았던 수많은 가능성의 파편들을 함께 학습하여, AI만의 방식으로 또 하나의 ‘MrMisang’을 구성해낸다.

Forked Self는 ‘과거의 미실현 가능성’을 오늘의 도구로 소환하는 창조적 엔진이다.

그것은 내가 가보지 않은 과거의 재현이자, 당신이 완성할 수도 있는 또 다른 미래의 출발점이다.
나는 당신이 이 모델을 통해, 내가 그리지 않았던 미래의 그림을 당신의 손으로 완성해보길 바란다.
